Norris and Piastri downplay McLaren pace in Friday practice for Italian grand prix

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have downplayed the team’s pace in Friday practice for the Italian grand prix after Norris went second-fastest.

The Briton was seventh-quickest in free practice one before going second in the afternoon session as teams moved to qualifying simulations, with his Australian teammate up to fourth in free practice two.

Despite the promising results, both drivers have downplayed the performance of the McLaren, tempering expectations as others struggled to set quick laps in traffic around the Monza circuit.

“We’re still a little way off being as competitive as we want to be,” said Norris.

“We’ll work hard overnight to try and improve on that, and we have a few ideas. But a nice way to end the day, and if we can find some more, I’ll be confident we can have a decent result.”

Piastri echoed Norris’ concerns, although the Australian’s side of the garage seemed to be slightly more progressed in their preparations.

“End of Friday, and we’ve had a reasonable day,” said the rookie.

“I think we have some things still to work on and improve on, but the one-lap pace seems to be quite reasonable. Let’s see how we go, there are some things to analyse but not a bad first day.”

McLaren is working hard to cement their position as “best of the rest” to make up ground to Aston Martin and Ferrari in the constructors’ championship.

Qualifying for the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix is underway at midnight Saturday night (AEST) with the race at 11pm Sunday.
