Scott Dixon takes fifth Indy 500 pole position with record speed

Scott Dixon will start the 2022 Indianapolis 500 from pole position for the fifth time in his career.

The last driver on track in the Firestone Fast Six, Dixon set a record-breaking four-lap average speed of 234.046 mph to snatch the top spot and earn the $100,000 NTT P1 Award.

The Auckland native is just one short of the all time record held by Rick Mears in the history of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."

“That’s what this place is about, it’s so amazing,” said Dixon.

“It’s crazy."

"This PNC Bank #9 crew and Honda, they brought it today."

"Just so happy for everybody.”

Next up is a two-hour practice session at 3.00am Tuesday (AEST) before final practice on 'Carb Day' at 1.00am Saturday 28 May.

Coverage of the 106th Indianapolis 500 begins 1.00am Monday 30 May on Stan Sport.
