Second-row start for McLaughlin in Alabama
Scott McLaughlin will start on the second row for the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama as Rinus VeeKay took out pole position.
VeeKay is the fourth polesitter in as many races this season, taking out the top spot with a time of 1:06.2507 around Barber Motorsports Park.
“I thought we had potential,” said VeeKay.
“It was a chaotic session."
"We knew we were in a good position, but to actually put it on pole was an accomplishment."
"I think the whole team maximized everything."
"We made the right decisions with tires, setup, everything."
Scott McLaughlin will start in fourth, just over two tenths of a second behind VeeKay.
McLaughlin had been a front-runner among the Chevrolet powered cars but was bested by Veekay and O'Ward, who will start alongside Veekay's #21 SONAX Chevrolet on the front row.
Despite Honda seemingly having the upper hand in the practice sessions, Alex Palou could only bring the #10 The American Legion Chip Ganassi Racing Honda up to third on the grid.
“Confidence is high," said VeeKay.
"I think from here we can have a great race and fight for the win, definitely.”
Scott Dixon and Will Power were both knocked out in the group stage, with Power unable to find the right setup across the opening practice sessions.
Dixon will start thirteenth, with power down in nineteenth.
The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by AmFirst gets underway at 3.00am Monday morning (AEST) on Stan Sport.
