Liam Lawson to add new team's experience to his FIA Formula 2 approach

Liam Lawson says the thing that excites him most about moving to Carlin for the new FIA Formula 2 season is the ability to combine the experience of his two teams.

Lawson moves to Carlin for the 2022 season after two years with Hitech Grand Prix.

"I've been with Hitech now for two years, so [it's] a new experience…" said Lawson.

"I'm looking forward to, having been with Hitech for a couple of years, having what I've learnt there, to take that to a new team."

"Every team has their own philosophy about how they set up the car and how they drive the car and things like that, so I'll not only learn what they are going to teach me, but have everything I've learnt from another team [to] be able to use both of them in a way."

Lawson spent a year in the FIA Formula 3 championship in 2020, finishing 5th after a competitive season, before moving to Formula 2 in 2021.

The Kiwi now moves to Carlin for his second year in F2, a team which counts Formula 1 drivers Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo, George Russell and Lando Norris among its graduates.

"Obviously a fair few F1 drivers have come through that team, including Lando," said Lawson.

"They're very strong, very experienced, especially in Formula 2."

"That’s the championship where they strive most in… and with the experience I think that’s the most valuable thing that they have going for them."

"I think last year [they] were very, very strong at a lot of rounds, but the rounds that they weren't so strong at are gonna be the ones that we have to focus on this year and try and have that consistency over all tracks."

The FIA Formula 2 season gets underway this weekend in Bahrain, which Lawson says is one of his favourite tracks.

Spark Sport will broadcast the opening sprint race on Sunday 20 March at 5.40am NZDT for fans in New Zealand, while Fox Sports and Kayo Sports will bring the action to Australian viewers at 3.40am AEDT.
