James Golding scores dominant S5000 pole at Phillip Island
James Golding has taken a dominant pole position for the S5000 Australian Drivers' Championship at Phillip Island, lapping almost half a second quicker than rival Joey Mawson.
Golding set a lap of 1:24.8126, the fastest lap recorded in the short history of S5000 around the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
The Team Valvoline GRM #31 driver was fastest in both practice sessions, with Cooper Webster second fastest in the early running before Mawson found his form in the second practice session.
Golding claimed a stunning pole position with a time 0.4730s faster than Mawson, at an average speed of 189 km/h.
Mawson will start on the front row after repeating the practice two order and finishing second fastest in qualifying.
Cooper Webster will start in third, his best ever starting position in his young S5000 career, with Kiwi Kaleb Ngatoa putting his Team BRM #15 in forth.
The first of three races gets underway tomorrow at 12pm AEDT on Stan Sport.
