Boys had the much better start, tearing away from the chasing field as the chasing pack squabbled for position off the line.

At the end of lap one it was Boys ahead of Aaron Cameron and Cooper Webster, with James Golding up to fourth after starting sixth on the grid.

Golding had a scare when dipped a wheel wide and spun in turn one, with Blake Purdie following close behind and lucky to avoid contact.

Roberto Merhi was quickly through the field and caught Webster for third before setting his sights on Aaron Cameron in second.

The Spaniard's open-wheel experience shone through as he diced with multiple lines to find his way around Cameron in his second-ever S5000 race.

The battle allowed Boys to pull a large gap on his competitors, up to seven seconds ahead of the field by the mid-way mark.

The battle for second burst into life on lap ten, when Merhi made his way down the inside through turn two to set Aaron Cameron up for the overtake.

The fight further down the field tipped over on lap eleven when Blake Purdie attempted to slip down the inside of Joey Mawson in turn eight, clipping his right rear tyre and spinning the current Australian Drivers' Champion.

The excitement continued when Yoshiaki Katayama took a trip through the grass, bouncing into the air as he ran wide on the outside of turn seven.

Jordan Boys took the chequered flag with a three second lead ahead of Merhi and Cameron.

Race one winner Tim Macrow finished fifth, earning enough points to start Sunday's feature race from pole position.

Luis Leeds will start second with Roberto Merhi and Aaron Cameron on the second row of the grid.
