Pole sitter Tim Macrow led the field away behind the safety car with two laps for drivers to test the conditions in the rain.

Macrow crept to the starting line at the eventual start and skidded wide onto the curbs but held his line ahead as Aaron Cameron got past Luis Leeds.

Cameron was on a charge through the field, committing to the outside line around turn six and passing Macrow for the lead.

Macrow had a wobble out of turn one and Roberto Merhi was able to capitalise, moving up into second.

The battle wasn't over, with Macrow clawing back the position immediately afterwards.

James Golding spun off at turn one but was able to return to the race, while Joey Mawson tore through the field, up to fifth by lap five after starting last on the grid.

Nathan Herne went side-by-side with Macrow through the turn eight hairpin, with the move barely made before both drivers had to take evasive action to avoid Merhi spinning out ahead of them.

Cameron held a confident lead of almost four seconds at the front, pushing a path through the rain.

"It was absolutely nuts," said Cameron.

"Starting under the safety car, first time in the wet in these things, it was awesome."

"Tried to keep it on the black stuff, which we did, and it played out well for us."

The Victorian was a class above the rest of the pack in the torrid conditions, taking the chequered flag with a lead of 4.5 seconds over Joey Mawson and Roberto Merhi.

Mawson had a remarkable recovery to second after starting at the rear of the grid.

Aaron Cameron leads the S5000 Tasman Series standings on 105 points ahead of Roberto Merhi and Tim Macrow, tied on 86 points.
