James Golding wins red-flagged S5000 feature race

Supercars driver James Golding has taken the first ever S5000 Main Race victory in a shortened 10-lap event after Alex Davison was involved in a massive crash that damaged the circuit’s fencing.

“It wasn’t just handed to me. It was a bit sketchy out there, especially on cold tyres,” said Golding.

“I was looking forward to the race. I was really looking forwards to a battle with Rubens.”

Ricky Capo triggered a Safety Car when he spun on the first lap, with leader Tim Macrow falling backwards into the gravel on the restart, causing a second Safety Car.

Alex Davison was battling with Matt Brabham on the back straight when he slightly clipped Davison’s car, sending him into the fencing in an enormous crash that tested the series’ Onroak-Ligier chassis.

Rubens Barrichello was second, with John Martin in third.

“It’s a pity we didn’t really get to race. But it was great to be here,” said Barrichello.

“The message is positive. We had plenty of positives this weekend.”

The series returns at The Bend Motorsport Park on November 15-17.
