James Golding wins third Bathurst S5000 race marked by massive incident

James Golding has won the third S5000 Tasman Series race at Bathurst in a race marked by a massive crash on Conrod Straight.

Golding finished first ahead of Valvoline Team GRM stablemates Nathan Herne and Aaron Cameron after taking the lead from Cameron off the line.

Aaron Cameron started the second reverse-grid race of the week in pole position, but Golding's excellent start saw him take the lead into turn one.

The first lap was barely over when Joey Mawson moved to the inside of Jordan Boys into the chase, with the pair making contact at the fastest part of the circuit, skipping through the gravel trap and back over the track.

Roberto Merhi was forced into the grass to take evasive action, while Yoshi Katayama ran blind into the dust cloud and collected Boys' stricken S5000 car.

The race was red-flagged to clean up the wreckage, with Mawson impressively able to rejoin the race.

Nathan Herne was only just past Aaron Cameron at the red flag into second place.

Golding led away confidently at the restart and didn't look back for the remaining two laps, taking the chequered flag ahead of his teammates.

Cameron maintains his lead of the series on 165 points with the Shannons S5000 Tasman Series title and $30,000 in prize money to play for on Sunday Morning.

Roberto Merhi is just 22 points behind in second, with Golding up to third on 136 points.
