The Australian was called up to the AlphaTauri Formula 1 team when Nyck de Vries was dumped, but suffered a broken metacarpal during a crash in practice for the Dutch Grand Prix.

“Hey everyone. Had surgery this morning, got my first bit of metal work so that’s pretty cool,” said Ricciardo on Instagram.

“Big thanks to everyone who reached out and kept my spirits up. This ain’t a setback, just all part of the comeback “

With the F1 field returning for the second round of a double-header this weekend in Monza, it’s unlikely the Australian will be healed in time for an instant return.

“Any normal human being would probably be about 10-12 weeks but we know that these guys aren’t normal,” team principal Christian Horner told Sky Sports after the crash.

The next option for Ricciardo’s return would be the Singapore Grand Prix.

"The thing he was most frustrated about talking with him last night was he's just taken a bunch of time off, just got his mojo back, getting back into it and now he's on the bench again," said Horner.

"I'm sure at the back of his mind he's probably got Singapore as a target, but then again Singapore's probably one of the toughest circuits on the calendar. Nature will take its course."
