Daniel Ricciardo suffers broken hand in Zandvoort free practice crash
Daniel Ricciardo suffered a broken hand in a crash during free practice at the Dutch Grand Prix.
The AlphaTauri driver took avoiding action after coming upon the stranded McLaren of Oscar Piastri at turn three and collided with the barriers.
Replays showed the steering wheel rotating violently in his hands during the crash.
“We can confirm that Daniel Ricciardo has been transferred to the local hospital for further checks following his crash in FP2,” read a brief statement from the FIA.
Photos from the circuit showed Ricciardo leaving the medical centre in a sling before arriving at a hospital in nearby Haarlem.
A statement from the team confirmed that an X-ray indicated he had suffered “a break to a metacarpal on his left hand.”
After today’s incident during Free Practice 2 in Zandvoort, in which Daniel Ricciardo hit the barrier at Turn 3, he was brought to the local hospital and further examinations were carried out. An X-ray confirmed he sustained a break to a metacarpal on his left hand, and this injury will not allow him to continue his duties, so he will be replaced by the team’s reserve driver Liam Lawson for the remainder of this weekend. The team wishes him all the best for the quickest possible recovery.
