Verstappen on pole as Norris and Piastri lock out Silverstone top three

Max Verstappen took his fifth pole position in a row at Silverstone as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri celebrated the best qualifying result of the season for McLaren.

Verstappen narrowly held off Norris by just over two-tenths of a second as the drying track provided increasingly quick lap times.

“It’s been quite a crazy qualifying, it’s been quite hectic, also quite slippery in some places,” said Verstappen

“We did our laps and then, in Q3, I was quite surprised to see Norris and Piastri there, but it’s great for McLaren as well to be here.”

“From our side, very happy, of course, to be on pole!”

Teammate Sergio Perez was knocked out in Q1, with both Kevin Magnussen suffering a power failure and brining out the red flag.

Yuki Tsunoda, Guanyu Zhou, Nyck de Vries, were also out in the first session, with Bottas through to Q2 but suffering a power failure at the end of the session and ending his day.

The Alfa Romeo driver was later disqualified from the session after being unable to provide a 1 litre fuel sample after the session.

Logan Sargeant went out in Q2 in a disappointing turn for Williams after showing pace throughout practice on Friday.

Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll, and Nico Hulkenberg also went out in the second session, with Ocon and Stroll potentially losing time as they squabbled over track position.

With times rapidly falling as the track dried in Q3, the order was uncertain until the final set of flying laps, with Verstappen narrowly earning pole ahead of Norris and Piastri.

The Formula One British Grand Prix is underway at midnight Sunday (AEST).
