Verstappen wins, Norris second as McLaren puts on a show in British Grand Prix

Max Verstappen withstood a poor start and early battle with McLaren to extend his record winning streak at the British Grand Prix ahead of Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, a popular podium at their home race.

Verstappen had a poor start off the line and had to chase down Lando Norris for the lead, making the pass with DRS assistance on the local and finishing with a lead of 3.798 seconds.

"We had a terrible start, so we need to look into why that was,” said Verstappen.

“Both McLarens in the beginning were super quick, so it took a few laps to pass them.”

“After the safety car on the softest compound around here, it was a little bit more tricky for us to keep them (tyres) alive basically. Very happy that we won again and 11 wins in a row for the team - I think that is pretty incredible."

It was an incredible display from McLaren, with Norris into the lead and Australian Oscar Piastri into second off the start as Verstappen struggled. The Dutchman was able to dispatch Piastri on the opening lap but faced an uphill battle in passing Norris, a promising sign for the British team with both cars carrying upgrades this week.

In Austria it was Ferrari who had the handle on the rest of the field, but at Silverstone it was Norris who held on to Verstappen for second place by just under four seconds, with Piastri losing out in the pit stops as he made a tyre change shortly before the safety car.

Piastri would have otherwise been on the podium for the first time in his Formula 1 career, but still walks away with fourth and the best result so far of his rookie season.

It was the Haas of Kevin Magnussen which brought out the safety car, catching fire on track under the bridge, while both Alpines also retired to pit lane with mechanical problems.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas once again put on a display of consistency with Lewis Hamilton in third and George Russell in fifth, holding their second place in the Constructors' championship.

Red Bull takes the record for most victories in a row from McLaren, while Verstappen extends his lead of the championship to 99 points after also taking the point for fastest lap. Teammate Sergio Perez remains second, finishing sixth at Silverstone after starting towards the rear of the grid, while the battle for third in the standings tightens.

Fernando Alonso leads Lewis Hamilton by 16 points, with the Mercedes driver gaining on his long-time Spanish rival as Aston Martin struggles to continue their success from the start of the season.
