Mawson was penalised during the race, dropping from the lead and certain victory down to fourth in the standings.

The 88Racing/Team BRM driver explained himself after the race, stating that he was used to European racing conventions where you can overlap, but not overtake, the driver ahead before the control line.

The issue was raised in television commentary that Aaron Cameron could be at risk of a penalty for the same offence, with the Team Valvoline GRM driver penalised shortly after the race and losing his third-place position.

The ensuing penalty promoted Mawson back onto the podium in third place, with Cameron dropped to seventh in the final standings.
