"It was fun today, definitely fun," said the Australian.

Ricciardo qualified fourteenth but improved to eleventh in the eventful sprint which saw George Russell take his first F1 victory.

While attention was focused on Russell battling Max Verstappen for the lead, Ricciardo was part of a bustling mid-pack which featured spirited battles on the always-exciting Interlagos circuit.

"There were lots of battles," said Ricciardo.

"I want to watch it again to see because I gained spots and then lost spots, so I don’t know if that’s positioning."

"I’m sure I could have done some things better – but yeah, then I found my way back through, so it was decent."

"I guess when you start in the midfield, it can yo-yo a little bit."

"I think I’ve still got to find a couple of tenths, just to help out for tomorrow and put me a bit more in the fight, so we’ll see what we can do tonight – but we gained some spots, so that’s positive and obviously puts us much closer to the points tomorrow."

McLaren also made valuable ground in their fight against rivals Alpine, whose drivers collided and finished seventeenth and eighteenth.

Ricciardo's teammate Lando Norris was the highest finisher outside of the top three teams, finishing seventh and claiming two championship points - which team Principal Andreas Seidl said was the team goal for the #4 car.

For Daniel Ricciardo, the goal was to improve his starting position for Sunday's grand prix.

"Mission accomplished," said the team boss.

The Formula 1 Sao Paulo Grand Prix gets underway at 5am on Monday (AEDT).
