Formula 1 qualifying could move to Sunday - Masi

FIA Race Director Michael Masi says Formula 1 qualifying could take place on Sunday should conditions not allow it to finish on Saturday afternoon in Sochi.

Torrential rain, alongside thunder and lightning, have drenched the Sochi Autodrom, with a race apiece cancelled for FIA Formula 2 and FIA Formula 3.

“As we can see already this morning, the weather’s gone up and down like a yoyo,” said Masi, “and the intensity of the rain has been increasing, with some thunder already joining us.”

The final Free Practice session of the weekend has already been abandoned, with just qualifying remaining.

“The determining factor this afternoon will be the light,” said Masi.

“Sunset locally is about 1815, but with weather conditions like this, obviously light diminishes far earlier, so that will ultimately be our cut-off point.”

“If qualifying isn’t able to happen today, as we’ve seen a few times before in the past, then we will re-do a programme and hold qualifying on Sunday morning.

The 2019 Japanese Grand Prix was the last time qualifying was moved to Sunday morning.
