The FIA Formula 2 opener was originally slated for 10:30am local time on Saturday morning, but it never got underway as unrelenting rain continued to buffer the circuit.

Organisers said "heavy rain is set to fall at the track until roughly 1:30pm local time, with the forecast projecting its intensity to decrease into the afternoon."

The race is now scheduled for 4:45pm local time (11:45pm AEST) while the second race has been abandoned.

The first FIA Formula 3 race was brought forward to Friday to avoid the potential for delays due to inclement weather.

Now, the second race has been cancelled to allow F1 and F2 to proceed.

The Russian Grand Prix weekend follows a tight schedule as it is the first event this year to feature F1, F2, and F3.
