"I did it when it counted" says Oscar Piastri after historic FIA Formula 2 pole in Jeddah

Oscar Piastri has become just the second driver to take pole position four times in a row in FIA Formula 2 after putting his PREMA at the front of the grid in Jeddah.

"Fourth pole in a row, I'm very happy with that," said the Australian.

"It wasn't the smoothest of qualifying sessions, as I kind of left it to the last minute, but I did it when it counted, which is all that matters."

The brand new track was congested throughout the session, with Ralph Boschung the first to set a competitive time.

Robert Shwartzman was next into the mix, with Piastri going second fastest to make it a PREMA Racing one-two at the top.

With just enough time for a final run, Piastri went to the top of the field with a time of 1:40.878, edging out Shwartzman as PREMA locked out the front row ahead of French driver Théo Pourchaire.

"The car was great, and I really thank the team for the effort," said Piastri.

"With Robert and I in first and second, it's a testament to how strong the team has been today."

"Now, full focus on the races."

Kiwi Marcus Armstrong was ninth fastest, with countryman Liam Lawson in tenth.

That means the pair of New Zealanders will start Sprint Race 1 on the front row after the grid is reversed.

Jack Doohan qualified in P16 in his first competitive FIA Formula 2 session for MP Motorsport.
