New FIA 'Motorsport Games' set to include international Formula 4 category

The FIA has published the June decisions of the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC), which include the announcement of a new ‘international, multidisciplinary sporting event”: the Motorsport Games.

The FIA press release reads as follows:

The Council approved the ‘FIA Motorsport Games’, a new international, multidisciplinary sporting event that will see drivers competing not for individual recognition, but for their country. Taking place annually, the Games will initially feature six categories: GT, Touring Car, Formula 4, Drifting, Karting Slalom and Digital Motorsport. Each competition will award Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, contributing to an overall medal table.

The inaugural edition of the Games will be held from 31 October to 3 November 2019 in Rome.

It appears that the event is still in it’s early stages of planning, but the inclusion of Formula 4 hints that the event may either contain or take the place of the long-rumoured ‘Formula 4 World Cup’.

Among the other changes announced from the meeting were adjustments to the Super Licence system. Points will be awarded to the W Series and Euroformula Open from 2020 onwards, and two championships per year will now count towards a driver’s Super Licence points total.

Championships must include five discrete race meetings to be eligible for Super Licence points, casting a shadow of doubt over the 2019 CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 program, with an extended championship season required from 2020.

The WMSC has responsibility for all aspects of international motorsport and meets at least four times a year where it discusses and decides upon the rules, regulations, safety and development of the motorsport industry from its most basic roots of karting right up to Formula One.
