S5000 "bitterly disappointed" by Australian Grand Prix cancellation

VHT S5000 championship category manager Chris Lambden has said he is “bitterly disappointed” with the cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix.

The S5000 category was set to make its championship debut at the Grand Prix this weekend, after two non-championship events last year.

Lambden spoke to Highway F1 immediately after learning the Grand Prix and all support categories were cancelled:

“This is our big showcase, our first Gold Star championship round. We've got Rubens here, Fisi... The people who have put this together have done a fantastic job. So I'm just disappointed for everybody and for all the people coming here to see S5000.

“Some people on social media weren't really coming for F1, they were coming for S5000. So I'm really disappointed for everyone, but that's the price you pay for the current world situation and political correctness, perhaps.”

Speaking about the future of this year’s championship, Lambden was positive.

“As far as we're concerned, [Sydney] is on. The only thing that will stop it being on is if there is government intervention, but as far as we are concerned, it's on. Even if we run it without spectators, on television, it's on. As of Friday the 13th, that's the update.”

The series is due to return at the Sydney round of the Motorsport Australia Championships later this month.

Asked what he was up to now the S5000 championship debut was cancelled, Lambden said it was simple:

“Get this sorted, go home, feet up, cold drink.”
