Piquet claimed the lead after a first-corner battle with polesitter Darauvala, while Shwartzman claimed third with the same maneuver, overtaking Yuki Tsunoda off the start.

Behind them, Jake Hughes was collected by Logan Sargeant, while contact between Devlin DeFrancesco and Alexander Peroni saw the Australian into the barriers and out of the race.

After a virtual safety car, Piquet held his lead, but Leonardo Pulcini had made his way all the way to P2 prior to the race suspension. Tsunoda claimed second off the restart, and a three-way battle ensued as Daruvala fought his way back through.

Further back, Kiwi Marcus Armstrong started P19 but had charged up into 11th by lap 6. By the end of the race, Armstrong was up to P8, claiming reverse-grid pole for the Sunday’s Sprint Race.

At the front, Piquet crossed the finish line for his first win in the championship, followed by Shwartzman, and Daruvala.

Kiwi Liam Lawson finished P12.
