Oscar Piastri opens FIA Formula 2 finale with pole position
Oscar Piastri will start his FIA Formula 2 title charge in Abu Dhabi on pole position ahead of rookie Jack Doohan in an Australian front-row lockout.
Piastri set the fastest time in qualifying under lights on Friday, his fifth consecutive pole position in the 2021 season.
"Fifth pole of the year, it felt very good!" said the PREMA driver.
"We were in control for the whole session and the whole day, really."
"The car was great once again, and it's a great way to end the year in qualifying, on top again."
"I'm very happy."
Jack Doohan was second fastest in just his second Formula 2 round, ahead of Guanyu Zhou and Robert Shwartzman.
Piastri will start from tenth in the opening reverse-grid sprint race.
Liam Lawson qualified in seventh with fellow kiwi Marcus Armstrong just missing out on reverse-grid pole position in eleventh.
