Campos to appeal Hadjar F2 sprint race penalty

Campos Racing will appeal Isack Hadjar’s penalty after he was stripped of the victory in the Formula 2 sprint race at the Australian Grand Prix.

The FIA stewards confirmed they had received a right of review from the Spanish team, with both Hadjar and Gabriel Bortoleto asked to appear before them after the feature race in Melbourne.

Hadjar lost his race victory when he was given a 10-second time penalty for the start-line collision, which ended the race of his teammate Josep Maria “Pepe” Martí and Invicta driver Gabriel Bortoleto.

Starting on the second row, Hadjar had a much better start than the drivers around him and moved into the path of his teammate, who was also charging through the pack after starting on the third row of the grid.

Martí made contact with Hadjar and spun off into the path of Bortoleto, taking both drivers into the wall.

Reviewing the incident, the stewards noted that Hadjar “moved significantly to the right to get a run on the car in front of him without realizing that [Martí] had a significant portion of his car alongside him.”

“The stewards determined that [Hadjar] was predominantly to blame for the collision and decided to impose a 10 second penalty plus two penalty points.”

Hadjar had taken victory by six seconds but dropped to sixth in the final results after the penalty, with second-place finisher Roman Stanek inheriting the victory, his first win in the category.

Campos filed the right of review over the penalty at 9.10am on Sunday morning ahead of the feature race.
