Pierre Gasly, George Russell under investigation after F1 Barcelona qualifying

Pierre Gasly and George Russell are both under investigation by the FIA following incidents during qualifying for the Formula 1 Spanish grand prix.

Gasly qualified fourth for Sunday’s grand prix but his position hangs in the balance, with the Alpine driver summoned to the stewards for two instances of impeding another driver.

Both Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz were impeded by the Frenchman, despite managing to qualify further up the grid.

Meanwhile, Mercedes teammates George Russell and Lewis Hamilton have been called to the stewards for their contact in Q2, with the stewards prepared to cite Russell for “abnormally [changing] direction directly causing impact…”

Russell apologised to the team over the radio for a disrupted lap but did not directly take blame for the incident, which may be his saving grace if judging by previous stewards rulings.

Both Alpine drivers avoided penalty for their collision at the Australian Grand Prix when they shared blame for the contact in turn two.

Hamilton qualified fifth, with Russell out in Q2 and qualifying 12th after aborting the lap on which the collision occurred.

Max Verstappen will lead away the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at 11pm on Sunday (AEST), but it remains unclear what order the grid will take behind him.
