The McLaren driver was tenth-fastest but moves up to ninth after Pierre Gasly was handed two three-place grid drops for impeding other drivers in Q1.

“Our car really enjoys these conditions for whatever reason,” said Piastri. “We need to understand why and try and make it like that in all conditions.”

“But yeah, a really good day for the team. Quite frustrated with myself. I felt like it was a good qualifying session.”

“Just made a very big mistake in the last lap of Q3 when it mattered.”

Teammate Lando Norris will start third, his best qualifying result so far this season.

“We could have had both cars up there,” said Piastri. “Frustrated with myself, but really happy for the team.”

“Obviously, to have Lando in the top three is a mega result and a big confidence boost for the team.”

The Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix is underway at 11.00pm Sunday. (AEST)
