"Big apologies to the team" - Hunter McElrea in Indy NXT start-line crash in Detroit

Hunter McElrea has apologised to his Andretti Autosport team after a collision with teammate Louis Foster on the start-line of the Indy NXT weekend opener in Detroit.

McElrea started second for race one and pulled onto the inside line behind Foster on the short run into turn one, before out-braking his teammate and punting him into a spin and the outside barrier.

“Not much to say about today…” tweeted McElrea.

“Big apologies to the team and Louis. That was on me. Should have been an Andretti 1,2.”

Nolan Siegel and Reece Gold inherited the lead around the tight confines of the Detroit circuit, with Gold taking his maiden career victory when Siegel suffered a gearbox failure.

McElrea will line up fifth for race two at 2.40am on Monday (AEST), with Foster with a second chance to start from pole.
