"Fundamental issue" holding back Jack Doohan's Formula 2 campaign

Jack Doohan says a “fundamental issue” is plaguing his Formula 2 pace as he left the Azerbaijan Grand Prix without earning any championship points.

The Alpine junior qualified just 16th, setting him on the back foot in each of the two 22-car races of the Baku weekend.

He was up to 11th in the sprint race before locking up at the final safety car restart, spinning out and narrowly avoiding contact with the cars ahead.

On Sunday, Doohan was 17th for much of the feature race before a late move on Clement Novalak for 16th at the chequered flag.

The Australian left Baku frustrated with his performance, with little momentum in the Formula 2 championship despite a podium in Jeddah and a top-ten finish in Australia.

“It was a very disappointing weekend and a tough pill to swallow being so out of place,” said Doohan.

“Unfortunately, that is the reality for now, and as a team, we have to understand what the fundamental issue is that is holding us back on pace.”

The saving grace for Doohan may be the upcoming in-season test, which will give his Invicta Virtuosi team the time to rectify their issues and hopefully find the pace Doohan is hoping for.

“I’m looking ahead to the three-day test in Barcelona where we will have more time to look through components and possibilities to nail down the issue and sort it out.”

“I look forward to coming back on top and getting back to where I should be for Round 5 in Imola.”
