Mitch Evans leads Jaguar dominance in São Paulo E-Prix

Mitch Evans came out on top of a race-long battle for the lead to win the São Paulo E-Prix.

Evans was part of the lead pack from the start and made the move on fellow Kiwi Nick Cassidy with two laps to go.

The Jaguar TCS Racing driver held off a last-lap push from Cassidy to take the chequered flag, with teammate Sam Bird taking the final podium position.

It was complete podium dominance for Jaguar with Cassidy's Envision Racing car also powered by a Jaguar engine.

"Honestly, this has come at a perfect time," said Evans.

"We've had a tough start and the car's been quick, so to finally get a victory and solid points is incredible."

Polesitter Stoffel Vandoorne led away from the grid and held off the challenge from António Felix da Costa as an angry pack of four drivers eyed off the win.

Cassidy made his way through to the lead with Evans in tow behind him as Vandoorne fell to sixth as he struggled with energy consumption.

At times it seemed neither Evans or Cassidy wanted to take the lead in the final four added laps as they jostled for track position.

Evans sized up his countryman and made the decisive move before having to mount a final defense from the Envision driver.

"It was all about track position and where you want to be at certain times of the race," said Evans.

Cassidy was far from disappointed as he enjoyed his third podium in a row.

"With a race like that, you can't not be happy," said Cassidy.

"That was Formula E at it's best."

Championship leader Pascal Wehrlein faced an uphill battle after starting at the rear of the field, making his way up to seventh by the chequered flag and holding the lead of the standings on 86 points.

Jake Dennis, who won the season opener and finished on the podium in both races in Saudi Arabia, maintains second on 62 points despite retiring in the early stages of the São Paulo E-Prix.

Competition is tight for second, with Nick Cassidy third on 61 points and Jean-Éric Vergne fourth on 60 points.

António Felix da Costa is just behind in fifth on 58 points, with Mitch Evans propelled to ninth after a difficult start to the season.

The FIA Formula E World Championship returns 22-23 April for a double-header in Berlin.
