Mawson started on pole and didn’t look back, holding off rival Aaron Cameron off the line and setting about building a 2.3 second lead by the chequered flag.

The joint-venture took the 15h victory for Team BRM, drawing level with rivals and category operators Garry Rogers Motorsport.

Meanwhile Cameron, the lead GRM finisher, revealed after the race he didn’t have a working radio.

He spent most of the race hard at work holding off Cooper Webster as the Versa driver made the most of the new push-to-pash system.

Cameron held on to second despite the constant pressure, with Webster completing the podium.

Pre-race issues for two other GRM drivers sent them to the rear of the field, as James Golding suffered a broken brake rotor and Roberto Merhi was found to have a damaged wishbone - taking them off second and third on the grid respectively.

Jordan Boys was fourth in a valiant effort to hold off the chasing pack, followed by Golding in fifth after making his way back up through the field after his pit lane start.

Roberto Merhi was penalised for his late issues, dropping to ninth after a 10-second penalty.

Round one of the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship continues tomorrow on Stan Sport.
