Marcus Ericsson wins 2022 Indy 500 in grandstand finish
Marcus Ericsson has won the 2022 Indianapolis 500 in a grandstand finish after a late-race red flag.
Ericsson was in the lead when Jimmie Johnson hit the wall, bringing out the red flag with just four laps remaining.
The Swede had just two racing laps to hold off the challenge from Tony Kanaan, Pato O’Ward and Felix Rosenqvist.
O’Ward made a spirited effort, passing Kanaan and chasing down Ericsson, but couldn’t get past the #8 Huski Chocolate Chip Ganassi Racing Honda for the lead.
Sage Karam crashed on the final lap, with Ericsson sailing to victory under caution.
"You know, it's the biggest race in the world and to win is just an incredible feeling,” said Ericsson.
“The way we had to it – with the pressure at the end – it was a very tough finish.”
“I needed all that Honda power to be able to pull it off!”
“So we're very, very thankful for that. It's just an incredible feeling.”
“We've been strong all month, both our Ganassi cars and all the Honda cars.”
“We've been the ones to beat, to be honest.”
“To end up in Victory Lane, it's just a dream come true."
There was heartbreak earlier in the day for polesitter Scott Dixon, who had held a confident lead for most of the race before being pinged for speeding in the pit lane.
A drive-through penalty took Dixon out of contention for the lead.
It was disaster as well for Scott McLaughlin, who was charging through the field after starting in twenty-sixth.
McLaughlin crashed out with fifty laps to go after making it up to eleventh.
The DNF is also disastrous for McLaughlin’s championship hunt, with the one-time leader scoring zero in the double-points round.
