Kaylen Frederick suffers broken thumb after FIA Formula 3 accident

American Kaylen Frederick has retired from the FIA Formula 3 weekend in Austria, suffering a broken and dislocated thumb after a Race 2 incident.

Frederick was battling with Frederik Vesti through Turn 2 for fourth place, before the Carlin driver lost control under braking before Turn 3.

His spinning car collected Juan Manuel Correa who was ahead in third position.

After the incident Frederik retired from the race, and was taken to Universitatsklinikum Graz Hospital, where he was found to have a fracture dislocation of his left thumb.

He is otherwise well but will not take part in Race 3 on Sunday.

Formula 3 organisers have not officially connected the incident to the hospitalisation.

A fracture dislocation is an often-complicated injury where the bone in a joint is broken during dislocation.

In some instances the injury may require surgery, as a bone fragment may need to be removed before the dislocation can be treated.

To add insult to injury, Frederick was found to be responsible for the incident and given a three-place penalty for his next race.
