Thomas Sargent seals Australian Formula Ford championship at Winton

Thomas Sargent has secured the 2021 Australian Formula Ford championship after winning race three at Winton.

"As a team, this championship has been a work in progress for a while and we’ve had to overcome the challenges of COVID interruptions the last few years, so to finally get the job done is extremely satisfying," said Sargent.

Sargent took pole position and won race one ahead of Cameron McLeod and Harrison Goodman.

Cody Donald had a DNF in race one and surged through the field in race two after starting at the rear of the grid.

Up to second by lap seven, Donald clipped the rear of Sargent's car after a safety car restart, dropping both drivers to the rear of the field.

Rookie Jordyn Sinni seized the opportunity and earnt his maiden Australian Formula Ford win ahead of Xavier Kokai and Winston Smith.

Sargent returned to the limelight in race three, taking the lead with the fastet lap of the race on lap five.

He saw the chequered flag ahead of Noah Sands and Cody Donald, taking with it an unassailable championship lead.

The 20 year-old becomes the 51st National Formula Ford Champion.

As champion, Sargent will join Shell V-Power Racing for a test in one of their Ford Mustang supercars in early 2022.

Sargent has already announced plans to join the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge in 2022.

The Australian Formula Ford championship returns for a final round on November 27 at Phillip Island.
