Calan Williams reflects on "solid first round" of FIA Formula 3

Australian Calan Williams says he is “very happy” with his perfomance during his FIA Formula 3 debut, which saw him fight his way through the mid-field to P17 in Sunday’s Race 2.

The 20 year-old Perth native qualified in P23 in the tight 30-car pack, and was able to make up two places in Saturday’s Race 1 to finish in twenty-first position.

He had a much more dramatic outing in Sunday’s Race 2. Attempting an overtaking move around Turn 4, Williams was forced wide into the gravel trap, dropping him to P27.

The young Australian then fought his way through the field over the remaining 19 laps, eventually making up ten positions to finish in P17.

"I am very happy with the race, and to fight up to P17 after starting P21 and being back in P27 following being forced off the circuit in the early laps," said Calan.

"I was pleased to make some good moves to fight back up the order, and I'm happy to get a solid first round under my belt."

The FIA Formula 3 Championship returns this weekend, 11-2 July, for the Styrian Grand Prix.
