Oscar Piastri will be the sole Australian competing across the world of open-wheel motorsport this weekend, as everyone takes a break after the hectic weekend featuring both the Monaco Grand Prix and the Indy 500.

After his sweep of the round at Silverstone earlier in May, Piastri took two top-five finishes at Monte Carlo last weekend, P4 in Race 1 and P5 in Race 2. He currently sits third in the championship standings, only five points behind leader Victor Martins.

Piastri said:

“Paul Ricard is a pretty technical track – it’s one of the hardest on the calendar and probably not my favourite. There aren’t many reference points as it is all tarmac run off which makes it quite difficult.

“Sector one is critical and turns three, four, and five are hard to get right, but when you do it feels pretty cool. If you get it wrong in turn three your whole first sector is a mess. Sector three is one of the more difficult of the year. I’m not sure it’s a drivers’ favourite as its full of long radius corners that never seem to end but getting a lap together at Paul Ricard is very rewarding.

“The test there was pretty good earlier this year; Alex [Smolyar] and I were quickest for the sessions on day one. We’ve got the FR-19 in a good place and at Silverstone and Monaco we probably had the quickest car so we’re pretty confident.”
