The FIA World Motorsport Council has accepted Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand’s proposal that the points allocated to the Castrol Toyota Racing Series should be increased.
At the December meeting, the FIA announced a raft of changes to Super Licence point allocations, including a decrease for the Formula Renault Eurocup, and an increase for P4-P10 in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
The Toyota Racing Series will now award 10 points to the series champion, seven points for second, five points for third, three points for fourth, and a final point for fifth position in the championship.
The series has previously benefited from the change to allow drivers to accumulate points from up to two championships per year, as long as the series do not overlap. As a ‘winter’ series, the TRS is clear of most European championships, allowing drivers to race in New Zealand and collect Super Licence points before the start of the traditional European motorsport season.
"We have been on the radar for young drivers particularly this year with the announcement of the new car and engine package for the championship,” explained category manager Nicolas Caillol.
"We will have a full grid of 20 cars for this season’s competition and having more Super Licence points will only help put us further up in the global pecking order and attract even more drivers in the future."
A Super Licence is required to eventually progress to Formula 1, with 25 points required before drivers are eligible for F1 testing, and 40 points before they can take part in a F1 race.
