Liam Lawson takes yet another Toyota Racing Series victory in Hampton Downs

Esteban Muth started on pole in the reverse grid race but it would be Liam Lawson who took victory despite a lap one clash with Australian Jackson Walls.

Walls began on the front row in P2 and was followed by Lawson into turn 4, who made contact with the 16 year-old and spun him, with the stewards deeming the clash a racing incident.

Lucas Auer, chasing the leaders, moved past the clashing Lawson and Walls into second, but Lawson was able to rejoin the race ahead of championship rival Marcus Armstrong.

Muth finished the first lap in first place and quickly built a three car-length lead that stretched into two seconds as Auer and Lawson began their chase. Lawson applied consistent pressure on Auer, which paid off when the Austrian locked up into turn four, gifting the position to Lawson.

“I was a bit quicker, he was struggling through turns two, three, four and that’s where I was getting him every lap,” said Lawson afterwards. “I was really good under brakes at four and managed to push him into a mistake there.”

Unleashed from behind Auer, Lawson chased down Muth and the gap between the two quickly evaporated until the gun kiwi caught the slowing Belgian, and Lawson took the lead in the first corner of the final lap.

Auer and Armstrong tagged along with Lawson and both battled closely with Muth in the last lap, but he held steady and took the second-place finish, with Lucas Auer in third.

Australian Calan Williams finished P8, with Thomas Smith in P12 and Jackson Walls in P16 after the lap one incident.
