Alexandra Whitley added as W-Series qualifier

Seven-time Australian national karting champion Alexandra Whitley was one of the six drivers added to the W-Series entrants list on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was the first Australian to graduate from the New Zealand Elite Motorsport Academy, and the first female NZV8 Ute driver, claiming the category’s first ever female race win in December this year.

The addition of Whitley and five others brings the total number of entrants to 60, selected from a pool of more than 100 applicants.

The 60 entrants will compete for 18 seats in the competition, with Catherine Bond Muir, the CEO of the series, describing the format:

“Via an exhaustive programme overseen over a number of days in late January by ex-Formula 1 driver and double Le Mans winner Alex Wurz, we plan to whittle those 60 qualifiers down so as to determine those who will then go forward to race in the inaugural W Series season, beginning at Hockenheim [Germany] in May 2019.”

“We’re excited. Everything about W Series will be not only innovative but also rigorous.”

Whitley joins fellow Australians Chelsea Angelo, Charlotte Poynting, and Caitlin Wood, who are all racing for a spot in the new series.

The season will commence at Hockenheim on May 3, 2019.
