Matias Zagazeta wins Toyota Formula Regional sprint in Oceania
The 21-year-old took the first victory for Peru in the history of Toyota Formula Regional Oceania.
Matias Zagazeta took a flawless victory in race two of the Toyota Formula Regional Oceania series on Sunday at Taupo.
The twenty-one-year-old Peruvian started on the second row of the reverse grid and made a perfect start to take the lead from turn one ahead of teammate Enzo Yeh.
With a penalty hanging over Yeh for creeping over the line on the grid, Zagazeta just had to hold on over eighteen laps to secure victory.
"Its good, I think it's a very good result," said the M2 competition driver.
"Had a really good start and from then onwards was struggling a lot with the tyres. Enzo behind had really good tyres, and I knew he had a penalty but I still wanted to win on track."
"It was pretty fun, very cool, and now for the big one in the afternoon. The car felt fantastic and I'm feeling super confident."
The victory marks the first win for Peru in the New Zealand series. "It’s
fantastic to represent my country and to take its first win in New Zealand," said Zagazeta.
Josh Pierson struggled with tyre wear but managed fantastic car control to hold off Arvid Lindblad, who stalked him around Taupo Motorsport Park but was unable to make a decisive pass.
The American took second with Lindblad completing the podium.
