Luis Leeds announces Australian Formula 4 return for 2019
Eighteen year-old Melburnian Luis Leeds will contest the CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship, in what appears to be the first official driver announcement for the 2019 season.
Leeds wrote on Instagram:
STOKED TO RETURN AND BE BACK IN A RACE SEAT FOR 2019 IN @formula4au WITH @agisport AND @23redracing π₯π₯π₯ THIS YEAR WAS LOOKING SUPER UNLIKELY AND IM OVERWHELMED BY ALL THE SUPPORT IVE RECEIVED OVER THE SUMMER TO KEEP MY DREAM ALIVE. THANK YOU
Leeds has a bounty of open-wheel racing experience, having competed in Australian Formula 4 previously from 2015-2017, as well as entries in the Mexican and ADAC (German) Formula 4, Euro Formula Renault 2.0, and the Toyota Racing Series.
Notably, Leeds was signed to the Red Bull Junior Team in 2016, and placed third in the 2016 F4 British Championship as a Red Bull driver. He returned to Australia in 2018 and completed his season in the Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge, speaking openly to Speedcafe.com in November 2018 about his fears of not finding a race seat for 2019.
The 2019 CAMS PAYCE Australian Formula 4 Championship will commence with a test day on Tuesday 19th February before Round 1 at the Australian Grand Prix, 14-17 March.
