Liam Lawson takes victory in TRS Dorothy Smith Memorial Cup
16 year-old Liam Lawson has stormed home to another first place finish in the first round of the Toyota Racing Series.
Austrian Lucas Auer led the race as it began behind the safety car, and the top three soon broke away from the chasing pack. Marcus Armstrong battled Auer for the lead while Lawson applied pressure from third in the thrilling first laps of the race.
Armstrong and Lawson were inseparable, battling closely until Lawson overtook around the outside on the last corner going into Lap 6.
Lawson quickly caught Auer, taking half-a-second per lap off the Austrian driver’s times. The two battled for around 4 laps before Lawson took Auer on the outside in the final series of corners.
Lawson accelerated quickly away from Auer, and Armstrong soon followed, gaining second place. With the open track ahead of him, Lawson repeated his Race #1 performance, pulling a massive 9.921s lead over Armstrong by the end of the race.
Australian Calan Williams finished in 8th
