Juri Vips takes FIA Formula 2 pole at wet Imola, Jack Doohan to start third
Jüri Vips battled difficult conditions at Imola to take the first pole position of his FIA Formula 2 career as Aussie Jack Doohan was third fastest.
Rain had battered the already-drenched Italian circuit throughout the day, with the Formula 2 running delayed in the torrid conditions.
When qualifying finally got underway it was Ralph Boschung who set the first flying lap, with Clément Novalak and Jake Hughes both vying for the top spot on the time sheet.
Vips hit the top just before Olli Caldwell slid off the track, bringing out the red flag and suspending the session.
When the green flag fell and the qualifying session resumed, Boschung went fastest once more before Vips set a time of 1:40.221 that would prove impossible to beat in the final six minutes.
Ayumu Iwasa will start the feature race alongside Vips in second, with Jack Doohan setting a late lap that brought him up into third.
Kiwi Marcus Armstrong will start Saturday's sprint race on the front row after qualifying ninth, with countryman Liam Lawson in fourteenth.
Aussie Calan Williams qualified twentieth for Trident.
The Formula 2 weekend continues with the Sprint Race at 1.55am AEST Sunday before the Feature Race at 6.20pm AEST on Sunday evening.
