Joey Mawson claims Alan Jones trophy with S5000 round victory at Australian Grand Prix
Joey Mawson is the first driver to claim the Alan Jones trophy with his S5000 round victory at the Australian Grand Prix.
Mawson won the opening race and took out the feature race in dominant fashion, maintaining the lead from pole position and stretching his legs to take the chequered flag by over five seconds.
"It was a mega weekend for me," said Mawson.
"Pole position, obviously the main goal is to win the main race, also a bonus win in the first race."
"The team gave me a fantastic car all weekend and we're driving on a new circuit, a new layout that's much more fun, and overall just very pleased with how the weekend went."
Nathan Herne was up to second at the start and mounted the only challenge on Mawson into turn one before running out of room at the exit.
Herne held on for second but was shadowed all race by Tim Macrow, who got past Aaron Cameron on the opening lap to chase down the leaders.
Mawson was already 2.5 seconds ahead of Herne at the halfway mark, as the Trans Am regular led a train of nine cars all less than half a second to the driver in front.
Herne and Macrow held steady in front of the chasing pack to take the final podium positions.
Mawson returns to the lead of the championship standings with three of six rounds complete.
The Nulon S5000 Australian Drivers' Championship returns May 27-29 at Sydney Motorsport Park.
