SYDNEY—Australian James Wharton will make his FIA Formula 2 debut with Trident Motorsport at the Qatar Grand Prix.

The F3 race winner will compete with Trident in the penultimate round of the championship.

Wharton finished eighteenth in the FIA Formula 3 standings, becoming a race winner in his debut season with ART Grand Prix.

“I’m extremely grateful to Trident Motorsport for giving me this opportunity to race in the FIA Formula 2 Championship,” he said.

“It is definitely a huge step in my career, with new challenges ahead: from a more powerful car to longer races, higher tyre degradation and pit stops.

“There will be a lot to learn, but I will do my best to make the most of this opportunity.

“Even though I won’t be competing in FIA Formula 2 next year, this is certainly a great chance to gain experience, grow, and hopefully bring home a strong result.”

Wharton will get his first taste of Formula 2 racing action when the sprint race gets underway at 3.20am Sunday (AEDT), with the feature race to take place at 12.20am Monday.
