"It's you and the car, one lap that counts" - Dino Beganovic takes F2 pole at Australian Grand Prix
The Swedish driver snatched pole on his final lap after an interrupted session.
Dino Beganovic left it late to snatch FIA Formula 2 pole position for the Australian Grand Prix, going fastest on his final lap to best Martinius Stenshorne and Alex Dunne after an interrupted session.
“It's great to be here and take the first pole of the year,” said the Swede, who had laid down the initial benchmark but fell behind once most of the field had a chance to set a competitive lap.
The session was briefly suspended when Mari Boya hit the barrier at turn 12, and again later when Gabriele Minì stopped on track with a mechanical issue.
The session then ran to a time limit, with just three minutes remaining, enough for each driver to complete a final attempt.
Beganovic delivered when it counted, besting the Rodin teammates of Stenshorne and Dunne.
“It was a matter of being in the right position in the end, getting the tyres in, and going for the lap; and we were lucky enough to be [at the front of the] pit lane to avoid the mess in the back,” said the DAMS Lucs Oil driver.
“I'm very happy with the with the lap, with the qualifying in general, and with the Free Practice this morning. I think the car has been very nice to drive the whole weekend, and I want to thank DAMS for the hard work as well.”
After qualifying 10th, Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak will take pole for the sprint race on Saturday at 2.10pm AEDT, with Begonvic set to lead the grid away for the feature race on Sunday.
