MELBOURNE–Australian rookie James Wharton may not have had the FIA Formula 3 debut of his dreams, but he says nothing else will live up to racing at home.

Speaking to raceweek after the season opening sprint race, the ART Grand Prix driver said he was hopeful of the team's race pace.

"We have the pace in the race, we just don't have it in quali. It's just not very nice to not be able to show what we can do."

Starting 21st on the 30-driver grid, the issue of a congested midfield start was compounded after a collision with teammate Laurens van Hoepen, with both ART Grand Prix drivers and Trident's Rafael Câmara all exiting after the lap two incident.

"We have to do a lot of work there, but I feel like the car was good enough to get points even though we started a fair way back," said Wharton.

"So, it's a bit annoying, but we'll see what we can do tomorrow."

The highlight, he said, was the atmosphere of racing at his home grand prix.

"It was insane. When I was doing the formation lap, I just looked around a bit and saw how cool it is with all the fans."

"I wish we could do it every weekend to be honest."
