First podium for Jack Doohan as Drugovich sweeps Barcelona
Jack Doohan has taken his first podium finish of the 2022 FIA Formula 2 season as Felipe Drugovich swept the round.
Doohan started on pole and started well, holding the lead for the early staged before the battle between the two different strategy groups began.
The Australian was able to stay out until lap twelve on the faster strategy, but MP Motorsport held Drugovich on track, extending his stint to lap eighteen.
The Brazilian had fantastic pace on the fresher tyres and cut back through the field, passing Doohan for the lead on lap twenty-six.
"Coming from P10 to P1 is not something I would have imagined," said the MP Motorsport driver.
"So yeah, that was an amazing weekend and an amazing race."
Drugovich claimed a race sweep of the Formula 2 round, winning both the sprint and feature race in Spain.
Doohan, second-fastest on track behind Drugovich, held on for second, with Frederik Vesti in third.
"I'm obviously happy to get P2, I think it's a bit later than I would have wanted to be on the podium this year, but still happy to get points on the board," said Doohan.
"Decent start, nothing mega but held on for the lead."
"So that was important, better than my starts previously."
"Then kind of just managing the tyres in the first stint."
"In the end, I should have gone a lot longer on the soft."
"I didn't really know when they were going to drop off."
"So that's just experience on my side."
Doohan says his first podium gives him more confidence heading into Monaco and the rest of the Formula 2 season.
"I'm just very thankful to the team for everything they've done for me to be able to progress in my race pace."
"We're one step closer to having a complete package."
Kiwi Marcus Armstrong was seventh ahead of countryman Liam Lawson in ninth, while Aussie Calan Williams finished eleventh.
