Ukyo Sasahara and Jack Doohan take yet another 1-2 finish in F3 Asian Championship Round 2 opener
Japan’s Ukyo Sasahara took a flawless first-place finish in the opening race of Round 2 of the F3 Asian Championship at Buriram, Thailand, ahead of Australian Jack Doohan and China’s Daniel Cao.
Sasahara worked hard to hold off his Hitech GP teammate Doohan on the opening lap, as the two went side-by-side into turn 4. Sasahara then consolidated his lead, pulling ahead to finish four seconds clear of the Australian.
Daniel Cao fell to seventh after a clutch issue at the start, but came out of a three-way battle with Daniel Beckhauser and Ayrton Simmons in fifth. The Absolute Racing driver caught both Brendon Leitch and Eshan Pieris to ultimately finish in third.
With three wins and a podium finish, the result cemented Sasahara’s lead of the F3 Asian Championship with 93 points, 14 ahead of Doohan in second on 79 points, and Leitch in third on 49 points.
Fellow Australian Tommy Smith retired on the first lap with a broken alternator belt.
Kiwi Brendon Leitch finished fifth, unaffected by a 10 second penalty for track limit infringements.
