Dominant victory for Nikola Tsolov in F3 Austria feature race
The Bulgarian is now just one point away from the lead of the FIA Formula 3 championship.
SPIELBERG–Nikola Tsolov is now just one point away from leading the FIA Formula 3 championship after a resounding lights-to-flag victory in Sunday's feature race at the Austrian Grand Prix.
For the second time this year, and the second year in a row at the Red Bull Ring, the Campos Racing driver started on pole and built a commanding lead by the chequered flag.
“P1, and I did the best I could," said the Bulgarian.
"Didn’t try to push too much for the fastest lap, but we wanted to make sure I stayed ahead and won the race, which we did.
"Only one point off the championship lead, which is good news and a lot of confidence heading into the second half of the year, to keep going. It’s a good way to start the second half, and let’s keep it up."
Hitech TGR driver Martinius Stenshorne stormed through the field in an energetic race to take second after starting 15th on the grid, while Tim Tramnitz made his way from 17th to secure the final podium position for MP Motorsport.
Championship leader Rafael Câmara was hot on the heels of the leader throughout the early stages of the race but dropped back to sixth after his pace fell off dramatically in the closing stages.
He maintains the lead of the series on 115 points, now just one point ahead of Tsolov.
Behind the leaders it was a DRS train of around a dozen cars trading places throughout in a series of entertaining battles, with Aussie James Wharton unfortunately falling down the order in the final laps to 16th at the line.
The FIA Formula 3 championship returns next weekend for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
