Cadillac to join Formula One grid from 2026
The All-American team will take the Formula 1 grid to 22 cars from next year.

INDIANAPOLIS—Cadillac has received final approval for a long-awaited eleventh spot on the Formula One grid, starting with the 2026 world championship season.
The bid to join the sport was a hotly contested issue in the world of F1, highlighting tensions between the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), who act as regulators, and Formula One, the promotors and commercial rights holders of the series.
The bid, launched by former CART champion and F1 driver Michael Andretti, was opposed by some current teams who feared it would dilute the pool of prize money distributed each year.
Cadillac will be the first new team to join F1 since 2016 and the eleventh team on the grid.
"Today marks a transformative moment, and I am proud to lead the Federation in this progressive step for the championship," said FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
"I want to thank GM and TWG Motorsports for their constructive engagement over many months and look forward to welcoming the team on the grid from 2026 for what will be another exciting year for Formula 1," said Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali.
The bid began as a partnership between Andretti and General Motors, but will now be operated by TWG Motorsports after they took control of the family-owned group.
TWG holds a global sports portfolio including the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chelsea Football Club, and the Professional Women's Hockey League, as well as partial ownerships of teams including the Los Angeles Lakers.
In motorsport, TWG operates Spire Motorsports (NASCAR Cup, NASCAR Truck), Wayne Taylor Racing (IMSA, Lamborghini Super Trofeo) and Walkinshaw Andretti United (Supercars).
"For the past years, we have worked hand in hand with GM, to lay a robust foundation for an extraordinary F1 entry," said Dan Towriss, CEO of TWG Motorsports.
"Now, with 2026 in our sights after today's final approval from the FIA and Formula 1, we're accelerating our efforts—expanding our facilities, refining cutting-edge technologies and continuing to assemble top-tier talent."
Long-time motorsport and F1 team executive Graeme Lowdon will serve as team principal, and the partners will establish TWG GM Performance Power Units, a new company which will eventually operate as the team's power unit manufacturer.
Over 300 staff are already employed by TWG in development work ahead of the 2025 system, with locations in Indianapolis, Indiana, Charlotte, North Carolina, Warren Michigan, and Silverstone, UK.
