Angelo Mouzouris takes second Formula Ford victory after safety car confusion sees top three penalised
Angelo Mouzouris has won Race 2 of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at the Winton Supersprint after the top three cars across the line were handed post-race time penalties.
Mouzouris said:
“It wasn’t the greatest race for me personally. I certainly didn’t maximise the car underneath me in these conditions but you take these wins when you can get them.”
“We’ll go back and look over how that race went and hopefully make some gains to stay out front in Race 3.”
Liam McLellan took the lead off the start, charging through the pack from fourth to the led by the first corner. Ben D’Alia couldn’t get off the line, and the safety car was brought out as his stranded Spectrum 012B was recovered from the grid.
Mclellan looked to hold his lead off the restart, but Tom Sargent, Callum Hedge, and Jay Hanson all passed the leader before the control line.
The race finished in that order, with Sargent taking a 15-second penalty and Hedge and Hanson both had 10 seconds added to their race time as a result of their actions.
This promoted Angelo Mouzouris to the race victory, having overtaken McLellan after the restart. McLellan took second, with Cody Donald in third.
With two race wins now under his belt, the Victorian jumped from third to first in the championship standings, leading Tom Sargent by one point, with a total of 111 points.
